
How much CPD to Do
The AMSPAR guideline for CPD is between 20-40 hours per year. This is dependent upon your competency level (and/or membership level). 60% of all CPD must come from structured activities, with the balance from unstructured activity.
Please note that there is a minimum but no maximum threshold. It is expected that CPD can be averaged over a 3-year period during which the minimum levels of structured and unstructured CPD must be achieved within the maximum of 3 years. Some years can be higher and some lower, but the minimum average must be maintained over this period.
Please note that there is a minimum requirement which is dependent upon the level of membership. It is recognised that the number of hours may fluctuate from year to year.
Certified Practice or Health Administrator
Administrative roles are expected to achieve 20 hours
Certified Practice or Health Manager
Managerial roles are expected to achieve 30 hours
Certified Strategic Manager
Strategic roles are expected to achieve 40 hours
It is recognised that the number of hours may fluctuate from year to year, but averaged over a 3-year period they should achieve the required number of CPD hours.
What Counts as CPD?
CPD activities should be focussed on learning something new and relevant. It is sometimes helpful to refresh old knowledge, but the focus is on providing new insights, competencies or learning.
It is always the outcome of the learning rather than the method that matters. Any activity can count as CPD so long as something new and relevant has been learnt.
Some examples of relevant CPD activity may include:
- formal qualifications,
- short training courses,
- conferences or seminars, (AMSPAR accredits all Management in Practice events)
- reading,
- AMSPAR Health Academy forum posts,
- involvement in collaborative initiatives, such as Primary Care Networks
- the acquisition of new health management skills, resulting from changes to legislation or issued guidance
- articles written to publications,
- Self-Assessment and completion of AMSPAR Health Academy core competency toolkit
- Completion of ‘My CPD’ activities in the AMSPAR Health Academy
- The use of AMSPAR SOCIAL
