NHS England clarifies legitimate purposes for GPs and staff to access patient records

GPs and practice staff should ensure they have a ‘clear, necessary and authorised work purpose’ when accessing patient records, NHS England has said in updated guidance.

The guidance acknowledged that staff may need to access patient records ‘for a number of legitimate and authorised’ purposes in addition to delivering care directly to an individual, but said that access should have a clear work-related purpose, be necessary for that purpose and use no more information than is reasonably required.
