This is a proposal to alleviate the workload as the UK’s population continues to age and live longer. It is backed by the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and the new roles are to be known as Surgical Care Practitioners. The role, however, has been in existence for a while now. What is being looked at is how this role can be expanded and take on a greater range of procedures.
Age UK have indicated that they would be happy with the initiative providing assurance can be given that it is safe and effectively overseen.
